About the work:
On the left is the Azure Dragon, on the right is the White Tiger, in front is the Vermilion Bird, and behind is the Black Tortoise. These creatures are the Four Symbols (四象) of Chinese constellations, each representing a different direction and element.
Azure Dragon (青龙) represents the East and the Wood elements. It has a body resembling a long snake, the head of a qilin, the tail of a carp, a face with long whiskers, antlers like those of a deer, five claws, and a majestic appearance.
