Hyakki Yagyo - Guai
Hyakki Yagyo - Guai
by Masato Ohata x Manas S+U+M
About the work:
Hyakki Yagyo - Guai, shares the same worldview as the previous work but delves into deeper explorations. The previous work, Die-cut Hyakki Yagyo, was based on the theme of a girl and a lizard, portraying the lizard as a "dragon." In contrast, this work expands on the theme of a "tiger." Although it depicts a "lizard and a lion," it is constructed with the souls of a dragon and a tiger.
There was no time limit for this creation, and it can be said that it was a work that the artist, Masato Ohata, gave his all and put in his maximum effort within the limited time. Although more than half of the time was spent on the preliminary composition, there may still be some imperfections, but there is no regret. It is one of the works that Masato Ohata created with great effort and affection.
The blending of yokai (Japanese supernatural creatures) and bizarre elements in the Hyakki Yagyo series is a result of Masato Ohata's free artistic expression and reflects his personal preferences. It also reveals a part of the artist's "true self" in the work.
About the artist:
Masato Ohata is known for his skill in sculpting charismatic young men and women, infused with visual elements from popular culture. Some of his notable works include the "Survival" series with a post-apocalyptic zombie theme, the "Hyakki Yagyo" series with a fusion of Eastern yokai and divine elements, and the "Tokyo Video Game Girl" series with a cyberpunk aesthetic.
